Why IP camera pricing varies
Two cameras with the same megapixel label can perform very differently. Sensor quality, lens, low-light processing, frame rate, codec, microphone, weather rating and analytics all matter.
| Class | Typical use | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| 2MP entry IP | General home and shop coverage | True frame rate, PoE, lens and low-light quality |
| 4MP / 5MP | More detail or wider scene | NVR decoding, storage and night image |
| 8MP / 4K | High detail where lighting supports it | Bitrate, storage, lens and monitor output |
| AI / smart camera | Human/vehicle filtering and specific analytics | Feature availability, scene limits and recorder support |
PoE simplifies many installations
Power over Ethernet can carry power and data through one network cable. A correctly sized PoE switch or PoE NVR improves cleanliness and central power management, but cable quality and distance remain important.
Check recorder compatibility
Confirm ONVIF or manufacturer compatibility, supported resolution, incoming bandwidth, decoding performance and channel license before mixing cameras and recorders.
